abOut ouR cLass...

Attending Miss Vita’s Class at Wednesday is so appealing for me. As we feel that Wednesday is tiring day for us, we have four courses in one day, from 8 am until 3 pm. But when I attend the writing class, I can enjoy it much. Accompanied by pleasant music we start our course. Eating some snack is allowed. But all of that’s not make us abusing our responsibility in identifying our friend’s paragraph. In that day I identified Riza’s paragraph, she made 2 paragraph. And both were comparison paragraphs. I thought that she forgot about making 2 kinds of paragraph, comparison and contrast. :D

On Friday, as usually we discuss about friend’s paragraph. The first presenter is Aris. He showed his paragraph as argumentative paragraph. It was true but when he was asked about the topic and topic sentence, he couldn't answer it correctly. And it made Miss. Vita little upset with him. But from that case we got some lesson. That topic is not in the form of sentence, but in the form of word or phrase. And the topic sentence, it must be in the form of sentence but not always in the opening of paragraph, it can be in the middle of paragraph. And it can be implicit or clearly written in a sentence. :D

Challenging paragraph

Last week we still discussed about paragraph. On Wednesday, we discussed about descriptive paragraph which we’ve made at home as our assignment. Then in the class, we exchanged it with other friend’s paragraph and began to read and analyze some problems or maybe some mistakes in our paragraph.

For my writing, I’ve just made a very short paragraph. As I’ve said before that I’m not a good writer. I always get some difficulties in expressing something in my mind. Moreover in making story or some paragraph. I need a long time to finish it. Someone who got my paragraph was Mega, maybe because of my paragraph was so little then she got difficulties to analyze my paragraph. It was not because of  my paragraph was good but it was too little, so nothing to comment. L

Reading mega’s paragraph was so challenging, because she made an interesting paragraph with a lot of new vocabularies (for me J). She wrote it with a good composition and many new words. When I read it for the first time, I didn’t understand it well because of so many words that I didn’t know the meaning. So I reread it again and again, I asked her for some words that I didn’t know. After taking so many times for reading it I could understand it well. It was so relieved, and the last I could give my comment to her paragraph. J

I'm just thinking in my self that I can do what mega's do. I have to make a good paragraph as mega.

Paragraph ohh Paragraph...

What a nice discussion it was...

Many things I’ve got, and also happiness... The expression of Yogi and Putri when they caught out modifying their paragraph were so funny... Yogi with his innocent face said that he didn’t modify it, but actually he did… Also Putri with her incomplete paragraph, she omitted some sentences in the paragraph and didn’t realize that it reduced the quality of her paragraph... ^-^

It was clear that her paragraph is process analysis. But a lesson that we can take from his paragraph is better for writer to make some process analysis paragraph into a paragraph, not in form which Putri showed us last week.

And how about yogi? His paragraph was so confusing, the supporting sentences of his paragraph were not explaining about a topic sentence. And there were a number of topic sentences in one paragraph. But when I saw yogi’s paragraph, I remembered about my last posted paragraph… It similar with yogi’s paragraph, at first I thought it was definition paragraph but after thinking more. I changed my mind, it was explanatory paragraph. How about your opinion friends? You may check my paragraph first in our group... hehhe

The others two who presented that day were nita and okta. They paragraph quite complicated too. Nita argued that her paragraph was descriptive paragraph, because it described about the Japanese festival. But unfortunately, it wasn’t described by detail. We couldn’t imagine how the Japanese festival was. And the last we agreed that it wasn’t description paragraph but illustration paragraph. 

And for okta’s paragraph it was easy to guess. But it was very difficult to decide the topic sentence of her paragraph.

Wooww… It was a nice discussion, wasn’t it???

Actually I am not a good writer, but I’d like to tell you about my reflection after our discussion about paragraph yesterday...

When I got the materials that Miss.Vita gave to me. Honestly I felt a bit confused, moreover when I read about the types of paragraph. I remember that I’ve learned it before, but it was very long time ago since the last time I’ve learned it in my junior high school. And in my senior high school, I’ve never learned it anymore. So I forgot about it. But I tried to read more and more and looked at another material that is explained about types of paragraph. And I began to understand it little by little.

In the last meeting we have discussed about it, the types of paragraph. It was developed my understanding about paragraph.  Because we learned it together, we solved many problems about the confusion of understanding paragraph. And analyzing paragraph is looks so easy for me. But I changed my mind when I went back home tried to find some paragraph then analyze it. There was some paragraph that confusing me, and forced me to think accurately. And think deeply about “what kinds of paragraph is it?”, till I found there were so many question marks in my mind… Hahha…

But it was not a big problem for me, because I am here to study. So, one thing that I should do is to motivate myself to always study, study, and study, because so many things that I have to learn about. so...

What is a paragraph?

A paragraph is a group of related sentences that inform the reader an idea, it consist of many sentences that work together to explain about the idea of that paragraph.

A good paragraph consist of three parts :

The first is topic sentence, it is normally the first sentence of paragraph. It is the most important thing in paragraph because it helps the reader knows about the whole of it and it is the main idea of it.

The second is supporting sentences, they come after the topic sentence. These are sentences that support the topic sentence. They explain about the main idea of the paragraph. The supporting sentences must be supporting facts, details, and specific example.

The third is concluding idea, it is the last sentence in a paragraph and it summarizes the main idea of the paragraph.

There are seven types of paragraphs:

1. Narration: Narrative paragraphs tell a story, it is formed from several events which combine into a story. It is usually contains of characters, a setting, a conflict, and a resolution. Time and place and person are normally established in this paragraph.
2. Exposition: Exposition is paragraph explains something, it must be trusted and believable.  
3. Definition: Definition is paragraph that defines something. It must be written in a simple word so that the reader will understand about what the writer says.
4. Description: descriptive paragraph is written in order to make the reader is able to imagine the scene, object, person, etc. It makes the reader know what it looks like even though they never see it.  
5. Comparison: it is paragraph written to compare two or more objects, characters, and etc.
6. Process Analysis is describes how a process happens. This type of paragraph is usually followed by illustration to help in understanding of process better.
7. Persuasion: this paragraph is written in such a way to persuade people to change their minds or take an action. In this paragraph the writer needs to supply the reader with the information, analysis, and context they need. Because it very important to influence the reader, and form their new opinion, and take action.
